Heed every Moms time-honored advice and this year get her what she really wants - a homemade gift.
Mothers Day is a time for celebration, but it can also be a tough holiday for many. Though this craft was intended for Mom, consider gifting it to anyone that could use a bit of love on this day.
Contributor Mari Johnson brings us this beautiful craft that's designed for children of all ages. "My 3 year old was able to cut the dried flowers (with her plastic scissors) and weave them into the wreath all by herself." says Mari. "I just laid out the materials for her and let her get to work. She actually told me not to look because it was my surprise!"
Materials:
- Jute, Twine or another thick string
- Sturdy cardboard
- 2 different size bowls (approximately 2 inches difference in size)
- Scissors or an xacto knife
- Ribbon
- Dried or fresh flowers and foliage
Mari used flowers that dried naturally from bouquets, but you can buy dried flowers from your local craft store if you don’t have any on hand. Alternatively, you can use fresh flowers or foliage collected by your little one in your neighborhood.
Use the larger bowl to draw a circle on a flat piece of cardboard.Center the smaller bowl inside the outline of the larger bowl and draw a circle around it. This will give your wreath shape. Have an adult use scissors or an exacto knife to cut along your circle lines.
Once your wreath is cut out, trim the flowers. Leave a stem about 2-3 inches long. Tie the end of your twine/jute/string to your wreath and begin to wrap it around the wreath.
Show your child how to continue wrapping and let them wrap as much as they like. There is no wrong or right way to do this. The string just needs to be tight enough to weave the flowers in for the next step.
Once the wreath is wrapped all the way around, secure the end of the string by tying it to the back of the wreath. Cut the remaining string, so there is nothing hanging.
Show your child how to “weave” the flowers/foliage into the string on the front of the wreath and then the rest is up to them!
Once your child has covered the wreath to their liking, tie ribbon at the top and hang it up.
