There’s something undeniably magical about mushrooms, especially when they’re the centrepiece of a whimsical craft project that brings fairy tales to life. With a little imagination and some simple materials, you and your family can create your very own Fairy Tale Mushroom House—perfect for hanging up, using as a bookmark, or even as a thoughtful, handmade card for a friend.
This easy and enchanting craft is from our friend Anna from Earth and Sky Play and is not only a great way to spark creativity, but it also offers a chance to explore natural elements like pressed flowers and leaves. Whether you're looking for a fun afternoon activity with your children or a peaceful solo project, this DIY mushroom house is sure to bring a touch of woodland wonder into your home.
Gather Your Supplies:
These are the tools we used to create our Fairy Tale Mushroom House:
- Mushroom drawing or template
- Clear contact paper (or get creative and reuse clear packaging from your recycling bin)
- Pressed flowers, crushed leaves, tissue paper, or any other decorative materials you’d like to use
- Glue dots, Sellotape, or regular glue for assembly
- Scissors
Create your own Fairy Tale Mushroom House:
Step 1:
Using either a pre-made template or your own hand-drawn design, cut out the mushroom shape from your paper. I chose Kraft paper for a natural look, but you can choose any colour or pattern you like.
Step 2:
Carefully fold over parts of the mushroom’s cap, door, and windows, and cut out these areas. These cutouts will become the magical windows through which you can peek into your enchanted world.
Step 3:
Lay clear contact paper over the areas you’ve cut out. This will give you a transparent background to decorate. If you don’t have contact paper, clear plastic packaging from your recycling bin can work just as well or even clear packing tape—sustainability and creativity go hand-in-hand with this craft!
Step 4:
Now for the fun part! Use pressed flowers, crushed leaves, or tissue paper to fill in the transparent areas. Arrange the materials in a way that brings your mushroom to life—bright flowers can form a whimsical garden on the cap or fall leaves can lend a cozy autumn feel.
Step 5:
Once your decorations are in place, fold over the edges of the mushroom and secure everything with glue dots, Sellotape, or regular glue. Your fairy tale mushroom house is now complete and ready to brighten up your home!
Step 6:
Ways to Enjoy Your Fairy Tale Mushroom House
There are so many ways to use your completed craft:
1. Hang it in a sunny window to let the colours of the leaves and flowers shine through.
2. Use it as a whimsical bookmark to bring a bit of magic to your favourite fairy tales.
3. Give it as a handmade card to a friend, spreading a little joy with this thoughtful, homemade creation.
This simple yet enchanting project is a lovely way to welcome a bit of nature into your crafting, celebrate the changing seasons, or add a dash of magic to your day. Whether you're making it as a gift, a decoration, or just for fun, your fairy tale mushroom house will be a keepsake to treasure.
