Festive Cake Toppers & Holiday Spice Cake

November is here, bringing a chill and sending leaves dancing into the air. With the shorter daylight hours making for restless children, we are pleased to share with you a recipe that will warm hearts and fill tummies. This spice cake is a joy to make and even more delightful when shared with loved ones. The toppers will give your cake a little extra seasonal flair and keep children busy all afternoon!

Here's what you'll need

For the cake toppers

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 1/2 cup of warm water
  • Festive cookie cutters
  • Rolling pin
  • Wooden skewers
  • Watercolors and fine brushes
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

For the cake

  • 3.5 cups of spelt flour
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 4 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves
  • 1 stick of softened butter (extra for buttering the pan)
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of honey

To make your cookies:

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a bowl, mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of warm water (the ratio is 2:1:1).

Knead until smooth dough forms.

Using a rolling pin, roll out your salt dough until it is approximately 1/8th of an inch thick (the thinner, the better).

Use cookie cutters to cut out small stars, toadstools, toys, or other whimsical objects.

Place your cookies on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.

Bake for 2 hours.

Once baked, let your ‘cookies’ cool for 15 minutes.

Paint your cake toppers with watercolors.

Let your ‘cookies’ dry for 30 minutes 11. Using a hot glue gun and glue sticks, adhere your cake toppers to wooden skewers.

For the spice cake:

Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a mixing bowl combine 3.5 cups of spelt flour with ½ cup of sugar and 4 teaspoons of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add 3 teaspoons of cinnamon and ½ teaspoon of ground cloves.

Add 1 stick of softened butter and combine.

In a separate bowl combine 1 cup of milk with 4 organic eggs and ½ cup of honey.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and combine until the dough becomes dense and creamy.

Pour into a buttered cake pan and bake for 25 minutes.

Once your cake cools, insert the cake toppers into your cake. Display your cake on a holiday table or dig in right away!
