Candlemas is celebrated on February 2, the date that falls halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.Β On this day we celebrate the longer days and the additional light headed our way.
One of our favorite activities to do with children of all ages is to make Walnut Sail Boats. You can make these and them set them out to sea and watch them as they drift with the tide.Β
Here is an easy tutorial to make at home with your family.
What You Need:
Beeswax strips - We used leftover pieces from our Beeswax Candle Making Kit
Wick - Also from our Beeswax Candle Making Kit
Whole Walnuts - You can buy these at a specialty food store or a craft supply store
Roll your candles into 1/2 inch or 1 inch widths so they fit snugly within your walnut shell.
This will create short and squat candles that won't be too heavy when they are placed inside the shells.
These strips are rolled to be the perfect size to fit snugly inside. Our boats are ready to set sail!
May you enjoy the coming light with your family. Happy Candlemas to you!
