so light and soft and small
That though a million pay you bys
You would not hear at all
Did you know that there are fairies dancing and whispering all around you? You may not hear them now, but if you make them a proper home they will come out to play! A Pumpkin Fairy House is all you need. Once you’ve found a bright and inviting pumpkin, follow the instructions below. You never know…a fairy or two may move in soon!
Disclaimer: The knives used to carve pumpkins are sharp and are not for use by small children. Older children require close parental support and supervision.
What you need:
- A medium sized pumpkin (for example a Hokkaido pumpkin)
- A pumpkin carving knife
- A carving spoon (an ice cream spoon works as well)
- A big bowl to store the flesh of the pumpkin
- A small bowl to store the seeds
- A star-shaped cookie cutter
- Foraged goods like leaves, moss, snail shells, twigs, or nuts and acorns
Carve Your Pumpkin
Use a pumpkin carving knife to create a circular incision around the stem of the pumpkin.
Once the incision is complete, remove the top of the pumpkin to reveal its seeds and flesh.
Begin by removing the seeds with a rounded spoon. Store the seeds in a small bowl. You may later want to rinse the seeds with cold water and roast them in a couple of tablespoons of olive oil (and a bit of sea salt) for a tasty and nutritious snack.
Now, use both your pumpkin-carving knife and pumpkin-carving spoon to remove the flesh of the pumpkin. In the end, the flesh of the pumpkin should be approximately ½ inch thick. Store the flesh of the pumpkin in a large bowl for use in a hearty pumpkin soup
Before adding fairy house details to your pumpkin, be sure to add a triangular vent to the ‘lid’ of your pumpkin.
Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to draw a star on the upper half of your pumpkin, then use your pumpkin carving knife to cut out the shape.
Add two windows and a door. You may want to trace them onto the pumpkin before starting to cut them out.
Use a hot glue gun and glue sticks to attach foraged goods to your pumpkin house. Colorful leaves, moss, acorns, and the like will create a magical autumn feel.
Place a candle inside of your Pumpkin Fairy House. Remember to use a flameless candle or keep a close watch on your creations.
